It looks like this was the only full week of school for the month of November. This gave us lots of time for our ongoing routines and projects. We began a new unit in writing workshop focusing on using descriptive language and specific details. Children are writing about a range of topics, with a particular focus on "making pictures with words." We also read out second Great Books story this week, a West African trickster tale. I hope that you can set aside time for our next Great Books take-home story, on November 30. It really enhances the program when children have a chance to read the story at home with you. Children are almost halfway through with their alphabet books, and are practicing reading books as well. We send home one or two xeroxed reading books a week for children to share with you. These are yours to keep.
In math we introduced some work in probability, exploring the concepts of likely, unlikely, possible, certain and impossible. Children illustrated and described some likely and unlikely scenarios and I learned from this activity that very few children go out for ice cream after school (!) We also measured items in the classroom with unifix cubes and learned a guess my number game called "monster squeeze" which I will be sending home to play over Thanksgiving vacation (if you like.)
In Torah study, children listened to the story of Adam and Even eating the fruit from the Tree of Knowing Good and Evil. We talked about the serpent's punishment - he had to crawl on his belly. We wondered how the serpent might have gotten around before the punishment, and created collages to illustrated our answers. These are on display in the classroom.
