We hope that you have been enjoying vacation and playing in the snow!
Gan has begun handwriting with capital letters! Using the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum, we have been learning Frog Jumper letters (F, E, D, P, B, R, M and N). Ask your child/ren what you should do after you make that first "big line down" to write any of the Frog Jumpers!
Gan has been busy, reading and writing addition and subtraction equations and number stories. adding and subtracting numbers and objects, predicting outcomes, measuring objects and reading graphs. We have begun to write and solve our own number sentences, as well.
Up until now, we have measured objects in class using other objects, such as cubes, rather than standard Imperial measurements (inches, feet, etc). We read a story about the problems with using non-standard measuring devices to order furniture. We have also started exploring inches and feet, and using a ruler. Ask your child/ren about what happened when the king tried to have a bed made for the queen!
Looking at patterns, we have begun to explore how much information just is not enough to answer the question "What comes next?" We also have circled back to probability, in predicting which numbers would be rolled more frequently when using two dice. Students applied addition skills to come with two-number number sentences for each number. Gan kids had great predictions before reading the graph, and explanations of reasons why this outcome occurred.
Speaking of graphs, I cannot wait until we begin writing our own surveys, collecting, then graphing the results.
Its almost the 100th Day of School! We will have been at school for 100 days in a little over three weeks. It is a great day for us to practice our counting skills, counting by 10s and 5s, and 1s forwards and backwards. We will work on counting by 2s shortly.
