Since returning from Thanksgiving, we've been preparing for the holiday of Chanukah. This week, we focused on the story, or why we celebrate Chanukah to begin with. We read many versions of the story from various picture books, and practiced retelling it as part of circle time. Friday was the big day - Gretchen Siegchrist, Clare's mom, set up her equipment (including her green screen!) and we brought children into the "studio" two at a time to share what they know about the Maccabees, Antiochus, the Holy Temple and much more. I'm not sure when our video will be ready, but I assure you it's worth the wait. In the meantime, here's last year's:
How's the reading homework going? Some kids are very excited to take home a book each night to read to you, and some are not. Or not yet. Each time they return a book, they are invited to choose a new one. In class, children are having book conferences with me at least every other day, and sometimes more often, while also having some silent reading time with their "book box."
As children are learning to read simple pattern books, they are also writing their own in writing workshop. This unit gives children a chance to become more familiar with high-frequency words, and produce lots of books in a relatively short amount of time. We've already enjoyed a lot of author shares, when children read their completed books to the rest of the class.
In math, we are working on patterns. Our first week was an opportunity for me to assess whether children can identify a pattern. We've also played some pattern games in Hebrew, giving us a chance to review color words while also extending our math work.
