The trash studies continued all through last week, and we while we are moving on to some new units of study this week, we'll be continuing to work on improving our school's trash habits for quite a while.
On Thursday, city council member Jesse Adams joined the class to talk about the single-use bag ban. He explained why he wrote the legislation, and how he went about getting it made into a law. We are grateful that he took time out of his busy schedule to visit that Gan.
On Friday, biblical archaeologist joined us to teach us about what an archaeologist does. He showed us photos of his team at work, and some of the many discoveries they have made. He guided the children through the process of using these clues to learn more about the people in Canaan thousands of years ago. Then, he let the children sift through pottery - essentially 2,000 year old trash. Will people be picking through our yogurt tubes in thousands of years? And what will they conclude about us?
After reviewing the surveys of the school, the Gan learned that there are many reasons that some of our trash winds up in the landfill when it doesn't need to. We learned that some people don't realize it's important, some people forget, some people don't know what can and can't be recycled, and some classrooms don't have containers. We then brainstormed ways to help solve the problem. The children decided that making both signs and a video, as well as a song, would all be good strategies. Fortunately we have some very tech-savvy sixth grade buddies, who worked with the Gan to begin making both videos and signs, and we'll be spending the next few buddy times on this project.

As we move into the holiday of Purim, we have some plans to create a trash palace, and I'm going to put the Gan to work to see if we can design waste-free Mishloach Manot (Purim gift bags.) We'll keep you posted!
