Our first chrysalises are a week old, and we are hopeful that a monarch butterfly will emerge very soon. We've begun learning about butterfly migration - through a charming children's book called Gotta Go Gotta Go, and through an excerpt of the Nova special The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies. I had only intended to show about 10 minutes, but when library time was cancelled at the last minute, we watched quite a bit more - the children were riveted. (A funny coincidence - the documentary is narrated by Stockard Channing, who also reads Ramona the Pest, which we are listening to at rest.)
We also spent some time at Abundance Farm, planting and watering fall vegetables. Other highlights of the last few days included creating self-portraits, which will be on display next week. Here they are in a little slide show:
We also spent time playing blindfolded listening games, exploring new math materials including geoblocks and attribute blocks, and playing the math game "sparkle." (Ask your child.)
The Gan has begun joining the whole school for recess in the morning, while continuing to have our own recess in the afternoon. Tomorrow we'll join the whole school for Kabbalat Shabbat in the Oolam at 2:40 - with Gan challah for all!
