Welcome to the Gan blog. Over the course of the year, we'll be using this website as a place to tell you more about our classroom - where we've been and where we are going. We'll offer links for learning more about some of the topics we're studying, and photos of the children engaged in their work. For now, feel free to browse past years' posts for a glimpse at life in the Gan.
The teachers in the Gan are Morah Amy, Morah Andrea and Moreh Tyler. Many other adults will also interact with your children. Morah Kitty will teach art, Morah Felicia will teach music, Morah Kacey will teach P.E., and many of the other staff members of the school supervise the children at recess, lunch and transitions. There are a lot of new faces to get used to (you can have a look on the faculty page of the LGA website) , so during the first few weeks of school, either Morah Andrea, Morah Amy or Moreh Tyler will accompany children to all specials, while children form relationships with our school family.
Drop in day is on September 6. As I know you've heard from Gail Lansky, this is an optional visit for your child to stop by, with a caregiver, to get a glimpse of our room and the teachers before getting dropped off for the first half-day of school on September 7.
What should you expect on the first half day of school? The "shake-hands-with Morah Devorah" line at the front door is usually long and slow-moving on the first day, as our principal personally greets all new and returning students. So, while doors open at 8:00, and we regularly start meeting promptly at 8:15, on the first day of school we expect to get a later start.

When you and your child arrive, there will be instructions on the bulletin board in the hall about where to put school supplies, rest bags, and extra clothes. (Feel free to drop these items off on Tuesday as well.) We ask all children to wash hands with soap and water when entering the room. We'll have two activities set up in the classroom for children to work on before meeting. During that time, you are welcome to stay with your child. A teacher will ring the "meeting bell" to give notice that meeting is about to start. This is the time to give a hug and a kiss and say goodbye.
Morah Amy will lead meeting, which always starts with singing and guitar, and Morah Andrea will help children find their seats. Another LGA adult will help escort parents to the hallway at this time. While we love parent visitors, we wait until all children have really settled into the morning routine before inviting parents to join us at meeting or for other parts of the school day.
Please remember to pack a snack for the first day of school. As a reminder, the school policy is that all snacks and lunches must be dairy or vegetarian. All policies, and many other important pieces of information, can be found in the family handbook.
We'll be going outside for recess at least once in the morning and once in the afternoon, so please make sure your child has comfortable clothing and shoes, appropriate for the weather and outdoor play. The current forecast is for hot weather this week - don't forget those water bottles we requested because it looks as if we'll really need them. Unfortunately, we are not able to apply sunscreen on children. Many parents apply in the morning at drop off, and some parents choose to send a sunscreen stick for afternoons, which they teach their children to self-apply on faces. We are rarely outside for more than half an hour in the afternoons.
By the way, we have about 20 class pets. Can you and your child spot any of them in this arial shot?
